I'm sometimes asked what kind of work it takes to be an effective City Councilmember. Below is a brief snapshot of some of the things I've done in just the last two weeks.
If this is the kind of hard work and dedication you want in your city servants, don't forget to vote on or before Tuesday, November 4.
Infrastructure and Economic Development
-
Discussed economic development and solutions to stormwater flooding at the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) General Assembly. I learned there is still a little bit of funding available for the RainSmart Rebates program.
-
Networked at the Chamber's Level Up Berkley event to hear what our businesses need to succeed.
-
Attended the Chamber's State of the Cities & Best of Berkley Awards celebrating local standouts like MSU Federal Credit Union, Vibe Credit Union, and Chazzano Coffee.
Parks & Recreation
-
Joined the Parks & Recreation Master Plan public meeting to shape the future of our parks, including potential community center improvements.
-
Released my annual Halloween Treat Map so you can know where to go for trick-or-treat and find allergy-free handouts.
Housing For the Average Person
-
Spoke with a developer to explore ways we can build single-family homes that the average person can afford.
-
Wrote an article "Housing People Can Afford, In Communities They Love" to promote the Michigan Municipal League's MI Home Program, a state-wide initiative to make housing more affordable.
Accountability and Access
-
Prepared for and attended our regular City Council meeting.
-
Held my regular Talk with Dennis office hours, a practice I have been doing for eight years to answer resident questions and hear their concerns.
-
Knocked doors to hear concerns directly from residents.
-
Had my regular City Manager meeting to share priorities and get updates.
-
Attended the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting as Council Liaison to provide important context.
Education & Innovation
-
Spent dozens of hours reading and watching webinars to stay up-to-date and informed.
-
Spoke with several local and regional partners exploring artificial intelligence use in local government to increase efficiency.
-
Attended the Michigan Municipal League's Municipal Service Committee to help influence state legislation to protect Berkley's interests.
